Apolis - Arash Fayez

Apolis is a visual autobiography chronicling Arash Fayez’s life between 2014 and 2018. This deeply personal book assembles the artist’s entire U.S. immigration file, tracing his journey from arrest by law enforcement to his voluntary departure from the country.

Through a striking juxtaposition of official documents and smartphone photographs captured during the same period, Apolis constructs a multi-layered narrative. Sensitive personal details are obscured, highlighting the stark contrast between institutional authority and everyday experience. The project emerged from a conversation between Fayez and his immigration lawyer, whose concise summation of his legal status encapsulates its complexity: "You're not illegal, but you're not legal either."

Arash Fayez is an artist exploring the in-between through various forms of image-making. Born in Tehran, he studied fine arts at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco and currently resides in Barcelona.
